About ngurrak barring
Immerse yourself in the natural wonders, rich histories and cultural offerings of goranwarrabil (the Dandenong Ranges)

Endless Inspiration
ngurrak barring invites you to explore the natural wonders and deep cultural and creative history of goranwarrabil (the Dandenong Ranges).
The name ‘ngurrak barring’ (noo-rak bar-ring), which means ‘mountain paths’ in woiwurrung, was provided by Senior Wurundjeri Elder and project Indigenous Advisory member Aunty Doreen Wandin-Garvey. Proudly acknowledging the Wurundjeri people’s deep and enduring connection to goranwarrabil, the name was endorsed by Yarra Ranges Council and the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation in 2022. The project was originally named ‘RidgeWalk’.
Across 39 km of interconnected walking trails, see why some of Australia’s most significant artists, activists, writers and creatives have drawn inspiration from this landscape—a tradition that continues to thrive today in the vibrant villages and communities of the place affectionately known as ‘the Hills’.
ngurrak barring tells local stories of art, culture and history through a variety of creative platforms including architectural nodes, permanent sculptures, land art and heritage interpretation.
The trail leads through forests of towering mountain ash and rich understories, passes through townships and emerges to panoramic views.
As you journey along the tracks, site-responsive art and signage provide rich and diverse cultural experiences and perspectives while honouring the natural beauty of the environment. Curated around five creative themes—Ways of Seeing, Community, Activism, Resilience and Country—each section of ngurrak barring provides a distinct lens through which to appreciate the various ways in which artists and communities have responded to the unique environment and landscape of the Dandenongs.
From the abiding connection to Country of First Peoples, to shared contemporary experiences, each theme is explored through stories, images and artworks to encourage deeper learning about a shared culture and history that continues to shape people and the environment.
