Architectural Nodes

Pause within these reflective spaces and contemplate the surrounding environment

Architectural Nodes

A node is a meeting point and a site of connection.

For ngurrak barring, First Peoples design studios Djinjama and COLA Studio have collaborated on the design of five Architectural Nodes.

Situated along the five ngurrak barring trails, the Architectural Nodes explore each of the themes of the walk – Ways of Seeing, Country, Community, Activism and Resilience – from an Indigenous perspective.

As well as providing a place to pause and rest, the considered designs of these permanent structures offer an opportunity for deeper contemplation and connection with the Wurundjeri woiwurrung Country of goranwarrabil (the Dandenong Ranges).

Follow the links below to learn more about the concepts and cultural knowledge that informed each of the Architectural Nodes.

Djinjama

Djinjama is an award-winning cultural design and research practice founded in 2020 by Dr Danièle Hromek (Budawang/Dhurga/Yuin and Burrier/Dharawal). Our name, meaning “to make, complete, produce or build something” in Dhurga language, captures our approach to honouring culture and Country in the built environment.

Djinjama stems from Dr Danièle Hromek’s consulting, design practice and research background. Our core mission is to bring Indigenous rights and culture to the forefront of the built environment, placing Country at the heart of design.

Director, Dr Danièle Hromek

Dr Danièle Hromek is a Saltwater woman of Budawang/Dhurga/Yuin and Burrier/Dharawal ancestry, with French and Czech heritage.

Danièle is a spatial designer and Country-centred designer. Danièle is the first Indigenous person in Australia to achieve a PhD in built environment and spatial disciplines. Her research and experience contributed to the Connecting with Country framework and Designing with Country discussion piece by Government Architect NSW.
